How to Volunteer with WWL Radio
Joining WWL Radio could open the door to an exciting new pastime, supporting patients and the wider community through music, conversation and stories.
How to?
If you are interested in joining the WWL Radio team then this guide will walk you through what we do, the roles available, and how to get involved. Volunteering with us could lead you into a whole new and very interesting pastime.
What do we try to achieve
WWL Radio is a charitable organisation dedicated to supplying a radio service for the benefit and well-being of the in-patients of the hospitals we serve, for their families, friends and wider community. We aim to broadcast every day of the week, with live programmes during the day and evening and recorded broadcasts at other times.
Roles
At present we only have one role available, but it is at the heart of everything we do.
Presenters
Presenters plan and deliver our regular programmes. We aim to offer a range of shows featuring different music styles and genres, as well as speech, interviews and information. We are looking to extend our programme mix, so fresh ideas are always welcome.
Training
We aim to provide the best possible quality of broadcasting. This is achieved through training and every volunteer will undergo a period of mentoring, regardless of previous experience.
We follow a planned training schedule, but the time taken to become a presenter varies depending on the time you can commit and how quickly you pick up the skills. On average it takes about three months — and it is important to note that not everyone will continue as a presenter.
Outside broadcasts & roadshows
Being part of the wider community keeps us connected to our listeners. We provide live coverage of all home games for both Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic and attend local events such as Christmas Carol Services. We also supply equipment and expertise for roadshows and can be booked to support town or village fairs.
Fundraising
We are responsible for our own fundraising. Volunteers are asked to help with and support events to raise the funds needed to keep the studio running and our service on air.
Your commitment
Before you commit, consider the time involved. Each member typically spends around three hours per week at the studio, and some give more. We ask that volunteers stay with us for at least two years after completing training.
